Insured damage in 2024 caused by severe weather events exceeded $8 billion for the first time ever in Canada, surpassing the previous record of $6 billion in 2016 from the Fort McMurray wildfires and was triple that of the losses in 2023. It was also 12 times the $701 million annual average for the 2001-2010 decade, according to Catastrophe Indices and Quantification Inc.
