Couple's Grant Thornton Settlement Taxable, 11th Circ. Says
A couple owe tax on an $800,000 settlement of a suit against accounting firm Grant Thornton because they didn't show they wouldn't have owed taxes had the firm followed through on its tax planning, the Eleventh Circuit said Tuesday.

Malpractice Settlement Is Taxable Income, 11th Circ. Told
A Florida district court erred when it ruled that a couple admitting to using an illegal tax shelter did not have to report an $800,000 malpractice settlement from their attorneys who advised them on the shelter, the federal government said in a brief filed Thursday with the 11th Circuit.
