The Ninth Circuit ruled on Tuesday that the Los Angeles Fire Department's dispatchers and aeromedical technicians were entitled to standard overtime pay because they did not fall within an exemption to the Fair Labor Standards Act for employees "engaged in fire protection."

The city of Los Angeles urged the Ninth Circuit on Friday to toss awards totaling $4.1 million to fire department dispatchers and other employees in two wage-and-hour cases, saying the municipal workers fall within an exemption from overtime compensation that applies to "fire protection activities."
