A California federal judge ruled Wednesday that teachers can't recoup agency fees they paid to their unions before the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark Janus decision, finding that the unions were allowed to contend that they collected the fees in good faith before the high court ruled them unconstitutional.

A group of nonunion teachers in California — including one whose U.S. Supreme Court challenge over union fees sputtered in 2016 — asked a federal court to force educator-related unions to pay them back their "agency" fees after the high court's ruling in Janus, according to a proposed class action on Monday.
