The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has agreed to pay $38 million to put an end to a False Claims Act suit brought by three medical workers from its neurological surgery department who said the medical center fraudulently billed federal healthcare programs.
The U.S. Supreme Court said Monday it won't take up the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's appeal over whether paying surgeons bonuses for extra work leads them to make illegal referrals to their hospitals for follow-up services.
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center wants the U.S. Supreme Court to set strict standards for proving a defendant knowingly violated ambiguous laws or regulations, arguing the Third Circuit lowered the bar for a suit claiming the hospital's pay structure violated the federal Stark Act.
