The Seventh Circuit has become one of the first courts to apply trade secrets laws extraterritorially, affirming a $407 million award Motorola won from a Chinese rival for Defend Trade Secrets Act damages in a suit over mobile radios, while finding that a $136 million award for copyright damages will have to be "reduced substantially" in order to cut out international sales.

An Illinois federal judge on Tuesday granted Motorola's request for an order blocking major Chinese radio company Hytera from pursuing a bid in China to keep Motorola from shutting down a Chinese case in which Hytera claimed it doesn't use Motorola's intellectual property.

While Motorola defends its $540 million trade secret win against a major Chinese radio company at the Seventh Circuit, the tech giant asked an Illinois federal judge to look into whether its rival has continued using Motorola trade secrets without paying a royalty and should be held in contempt.
