A federal magistrate judge sketched out a plan Thursday for settlement discussions in a dispute over the leadership of the Amazon Labor Union, but attorneys for parties on both sides said there are major challenges to resolving a case they agree could significantly damage the nascent union.

A New York federal judge on Thursday rejected a request by former Amazon Labor Union leaders to bar current leadership from retaliating against them, asking the union members to "work this out yourselves" and voicing skepticism that the case belonged in her court.
