Deals Rumor Mill: Glencore, Blackstone, Iberdrola

By Benjamin Horney ( October 6, 2014, 5:42 PM EDT) -- Glencore PLC is reportedly taking the first steps toward a potential merger with British-Australian mining company Rio Tinto Group, which would create a mining mammoth worth roughly $160 billion, Bloomberg said Monday. According to the report, Switzerland-based Glencore has already opened up discussions with Rio's largest shareholder, Aluminum Corp. of China, to see how much interest the state-backed company might have in a merger. Glencore's desire to combine with Rio comes as no surprise to Rio, the report said, although no formal talks have begun, and nothing official is expected to take place before the end of the year....
