Law360, New York ( July 29, 2015, 8:13 PM EDT) -- According to the U.S. Geological Survey, our border with Mexico spans just shy of 2,000 miles; our Canadian border (including along both land and the Great Lakes) just shy of 4,000 miles (not including Alaska). Our borders with the oceans (Atlantic, Gulf and Pacific) total just over 5,000 miles. The fact that these borders remain susceptible to some uncontrolled human crossings is an objective fact, not merely a political one. The United States does not have the ability to ensure that every individual crossing into its territory passes through an inspection process and is only admitted if fully acceptable according to lawfully prescribed definitions. Human error, human tragedy and human greed all play a part in undermining the sanctity of our borders....
