Several environmental groups on Tuesday announced their intention to intervene in a lawsuit filed by West Virginia contesting U.S. Environmental Protection Agency curbs on mountaintop removal coal mining, saying the state is trying to obstruct enforcement of the Clean Water Act.

W.Va. Fights EPA's New Curbs On Mountaintop Mining
West Virginia has sued the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to overturn recently beefed-up environmental requirements for mountaintop coal mining in Appalachia, contending the EPA has robbed the state of its authority to police water quality.
