The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission will pay $580,000 to settle claims in Washington federal court that it fired a former official turned attorney for revealing alleged wrongdoing by the commission and in response to accusations that he wanted to carry a firearm at work.

A former official with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission who was fired by the agency in October, sued his former employer for wrongful termination Thursday, saying he was let go in retaliation for his investigative work at the commission.
