$135M Chicago Spire Settlement Gets Judge's Nod
An Illinois bankruptcy judge on Wednesday approved a $135 million deal that allows the developer of the stalled residential Chicago Spire high-rise to exit bankruptcy, clearing the way for resolution to the project's refinancing problems and moving the project toward construction.

The developer of the aborted Chicago Spire condominium tower — which was to be the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere — has reached a deal with disgruntled creditors to enter bankruptcy in Illinois, according to court documents filed Friday.

The petitioning creditors trying to force the developer of the unfinished Chicago Spire project into Chapter 11 said Friday they might try to auction the property if the involuntary bankruptcy case is approved, and argued that the proceedings should remain in Delaware, and not be moved to Illinois.

The Chicago Spire developer, hit in Delaware with an involuntary bankruptcy petition earlier this month, said Thursday it wants the case moved to the Windy City, a community it argues will be much more affected by the outcome and where all of the major stakeholders are located.
