Principal Life Insurance Co. has defeated an ERISA class action alleging it wrongly profited from a 401(k) investment product it offered, with an Iowa federal judge handing the company a win against a 41,000-member class of retirement savers after a six-day bench trial.

Principal Life Beats Class Action Over 401(k) Plan Funds
An Iowa federal judge awarded a quick win to Principal Life Insurance Co. in an Employee Retirement Income Security Act class action on Tuesday, scuttling claims that the company enriched itself at investors' expense by setting artificially low interest rates for investment products used in 401(k) plans.
