An orthopedic center has escaped most of a $110 million jury award over a botched leg operation, after a Minnesota federal magistrate judge on Thursday called the sum "shockingly excessive" while giving the patient the option to take just $10 million or start a new trial.

A Minnesota federal jury has found that a St. Cloud orthopedic center's negligent care following a leg surgery directly caused "permanent, disabling and catastrophic" harm to a man's leg, awarding him more than $111 million in damages.
