No Refuge For DOJ In Chicago Sanctuary City Litigation
By Harold Krent ( August 15, 2017, 11:52 AM EDT) -- The city of Chicago's suit challenging the U.S. Department of Justice's decision to impose new conditions on the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program is all about politics. On the one hand, the suit can solidify Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's political base among Latino voters while augmenting his reputation as being independent and willing to stand up for immigrant rights. On the other, the DOJ's decision to impose restrictions on the Byrne Grant program targets (largely Democratic) sanctuary cities such as Chicago and thus furthers President Donald Trump's agenda by appearing tough on illegal immigration. Chicago's complaint is replete with nonlegal assertions such as "Chicago is one of America's great cities," and it republishes part of a Trump statement in which he spoke of "predators and criminal aliens who poison our communities with drugs and prey on innocent young people." The political connotations are clear....
