Law360, New York ( May 11, 2015, 11:11 AM EDT) -- Recent action by the Railroad Commission of Texas has highlighted the ongoing controversy regarding oil and gas production and their possible effects on seismic activity. On April 24, 2015, the RRC issued orders for hearings regarding two injection well permits. In an associated statement issued that same day, the RRC stated the permit holders were to show cause "why the injection permits for the wells should not be canceled and the wells ordered shut-in due to an alleged connection raised by new seismic research between ongoing operation of the wells and seismic activity in the vicinity." In issuing the orders and demanding the hearings, the RRC determined that enough evidence linking the injection wells to seismic activity necessitated the hearings and the RRC placed the burden on the permit holders to establish that they should continue to hold these permits....
