The test in California courts for determining whether workers are independent contractors "provides nothing remotely close to a clear answer" in a dispute over whether drivers for Lyft Inc. should get the same benefits as full-fledged employees, a California federal judge said Wednesday, ruling a jury must decide.

Class Action Against Lyft Fails To Pick Up
A California federal judge on Thursday tossed out a putative wage-and-hour class action brought by a Lyft Inc. driver against the transportation company, ruling that California labor laws only apply to employees who work in the state and therefore claims brought under the law can't apply to a nationwide class.
